Football Final

The school football team reached the North Cork Football Final in Mallow. The match was played in the main pitch in front of the covered stand. Daniel O'Connell had been picked at corner-back but had to undergo a procedure and couldn't play. Jake Madigan and Conor Buckley were our strongest players. Jake made some great penetrating runs and was unfortunate not to goal twice. Conor was playing with an injured tendon but managed to control the backs with his excellent sense of position and confidence on the ball. Luke Doyle burst forward in the first half and beat the goalie with a low shot to the corner only to see it go wide. Tommy O'Neill and William Carrol marshalled their men very closely and were kept busy right through the match. Tom Griffin was busy in the corner and had a tremendous first half. Frankie Herr was busy in the other corner. John Meehan  was kept on his toes at full back.

Logan'Brien stopped a pile driver of a penalty and cleared the rebound out the side. Danny Kelleher at midfield and the half forwards John O'Reilly and Mikey McCarthy had their work cut out to supply ball to the inside forwards. Jack O'Donoghue didn't get the supply of high ball he had become accustomed to so there was little breaking ball for Joseph Kavanagh and Jamie Herbert in the corners. Sam O'Connell came on and immediately won a ball, turned and kicked for point. Joey Herbert tried from the opposite side. Callum Kirby made his presence felt at full forward. Gerard McEnery added height to midfield. Graham O'Donovan  added urgency to the attack. Cathal Canning helped tighten up the backs.

The Mallow backs and goalkeeper were excellent and their tight defence was difficult to breakdown. They deserved their victory but full credit to our lads who kept up the pressure right to the very end. Jake Madigan accepted the captain's plaque and presented the medals to each of the team afterwards.
